We’re that much closer to seeing the worlds of Blusky and Mastodon come together in a way that users on either platform can remain on the platform of their choice but, be able to communicate to others on the other platform.
The problem is that both sides use differing protocols for their underlying systems. Blusky is built with the AT Protocol which is a much newer protocol. Mastodon uses the ActivityProtocol not just Mastodon but also services like Peertube, Owncast, Whalefunk, and many more. Work has been ongoing in many different camps for a solution to bring together the users of both extremely popular sites.

An important step toward a more interoperable “fediverse” — the broader network of decentralized social media apps like Mastodon, Bluesky and others — has been achieved. Now, users on decentralized apps like Mastodon, powered by the ActivityPub protocol, and those powered by Bluesky’s AT Protocol, can easily follow people on other networks, see their posts, as well as like, reply and repost them.
Very interesting times ahead as many, if not most of us, are extremely tired of the centralized social networks of the past 20 years. This is the reason we’ve moved on to places like Mastodon and Bluesky. To see that bridging connections between is a great step in the right direction. While both sites can remain separate, it’s for a better experience for users to have the option of finding common ground with users from a competing network.
